Emergency Planning
Normally, much capital and many resources are applied in order to reduce the frequency and the extent of accidents and hazardous occurrences. However, yet remains a finite possibility for these accidents and incidents to occur, being this possibility worsened by the deterioration of the originally designed control and protection systems. The damage extent will be determined partly by the extent of the event itself, and partly by the exposed people’s vulnerability, surrounding facilities and environment.
Many industrial sectors have a high loss potential, and there are numerous historic cases in which the losses, measured in terms of social harm and property damage, were quite severe. In addition to this human and material damage, there is another category of damage, which is the adverse publicity about the company’s image. Some companies almost went bankrupt by being involved in major accidents.
On the other hand, it is also true that there are many reported cases in which the potential losses that might have occurred were avoided as a result of an effective action taken in due time. These effective actions have been possible mainly due to the existence of a pre-defined strategy involving procedures, adequate resources and management, configuring what is known as an emergency plan.
