Evaluation and Specification of Firefighting and Protection Systems

The design basis for alarm, prevention and firefighting systems should account for the credible undesirable events that may occur in the facility concerned. The engineering design should be supported by: (1) Engineering and loss prevention good practices; (2) Codes of practice (e.g. NFPA); (3) Legislation; and (4) Corporate Guidelines. The following factors are normally considered:

a- Water supply and storage;
b- Pumping and driving;
c- Electric power supply;
d- Controls;
e- Distribution lines and layout;
f- Hydrants, necessary flow rates and pressures;
g- Gas extinguishing systems;
h- Cooling systems;
i- Water spray and deluge systems;
j- Supervisory and alarm systems;
k- Secondary containment;
l- Horizontal compartmenting;
m- Vertical compartmenting;
n- Portable and wheeled fire extinguishers;
o- Signaling;
p- Emergency lighting;
q- Training program.
