PROCESS SAFETY

Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA)

The preliminary hazard analysis (PHA) is a technique for the identification of the most evident hazards and undesirable events of a given process or plant. Some companies adopt the designation “preliminary risk analysis”. It is a comprehensive method, but of general characteristic, focusing on the main items that comprise the plant and/or the main steps of a process. The technique does not require that the detailed design of the plant or system is completed, and allows that the identification of hazards and possible events can then help on the plant lay-out selection and even on the project location with regard to its neighbors.

This technique was designed to evaluate the safety at the earliest project phase. However, its application also extends to existing processes and plants, when one observes the absence or the inadequacy of reference documentation.
