Inherent Safety
Training Objectives
Clarify the inherent safety concept; show how to apply it on new projects, processes or industrial plants; and show how safer and less expensive is to consider safety from the earliest project stages.
Training Subjects
• The “inherently safer” concept and its potential benefits. Added-on protection measures and their disadvantages
• Functioning basic principles: substitution, intensification, attenuation, isolation and simplification. Considerations and keywords
• Implementation along the process lifecycle: initial product specification, manufacturing route selection, pilot plant and scale-up, site selection and project layout, process flow diagrams preparation, conceptual design and process changes
• Conflicts and decisions when selecting inherently safe processes
• Creating a propitious environment to the inherent safety approach: safety, costs and operability; necessity of implementing safety soon in the earliest project stages; the “inherently safer” awareness; design questions
• Use of checklists, Mond Index and Dow Index for prioritization and evaluation of the several options
• Traditional routes for safer processes and the complex protection systems, which require a high reliability degree or special procedures to intercede in active way
• Protection against loss of containment, fire and explosion and hazardous and highly volatile products handling technologies
• Examples of inherent safety successful application in some companies: the process involved, the apparent hazards, the study objective, options evaluation and the chosen option
• Examples of major accidents that could have been prevented by the application of inherent safety
